Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee’s meeting dates

The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is made up of nine members and is responsible for the UK’s monetary decisions – ie, the country’s currency policies. This includes the supply of money, the credit available and the interest rate.

The MPC is responsible for determining the UK’s base rate of interest, and must make decisions in line with the target set by the Government to keep inflation at 2 per cent.

The committee votes at each meeting on whether to lower or raise the interest rate, or keep it the same.

Who are the members of the Monetary Policy Committee?

The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee is chaired by the Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey.

Alongside him sit the bank’s three Deputy Governors for Monetary Policy, Financial Stability and Markets and Banking, and the Chief Economist.

Alongside these five Bank of England employees four external members of the MPC are appointed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Finally, as well as the nine voting members of the MPC, all meetings of the committee are attended by a representative of the UK Treasury. The representative is able to inform the group on the Government’s economic agenda but cannot vote on monetary policy.

How often does the Monetary Policy Committee meet?

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meets approximately one every six weeks, or eight times per year.

The meeting always occurs on a Thursday morning, with an announcement on the MPC’s decision on the base rate of interest made at midday.

It is then followed by a press conference at 12.30pm in which the Governor of the Bank of England will answer questions behind the committee’s thinking.
